India, Sri Lanka Holding Joint Naval Exercises

9/19/11 (AEIN) The neighboring South Asian nations of India and Sri Lanka plan to hold joint military exercises in the Indian Ocean. The naval drills will begin on Monday, according to an All India Radio news broadcast transmitted late in the day on Sunday.

The exercises will involve several warships, including a large stealth frigate from India. The report did not give any details on Sri Lankan warships taking part in the drills. They signify growing military ties between the two countries.

India is the world's second most populous nation and it has one of the largest militaries. Sri Lanka, an island off the coast of India, maintains a smaller military which was largely tasked with fighting the country's Tamil separatists until it recently defeated them.
