9/22/11 (AEIN) American and Asian stock indices fell on Wednesday as concerns over the U.S. and European economies increased. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) released a dire statement regarding the world economy and the euro currency continued to lose value.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted 284 points on Wednesday, primarily in the afternoon. Japan's Nikkei average lost 150 points the same day, according to Radio Japan. Stocks also fell in other Asian countries such as Indonesia and Hong Kong. The euro fell to a ten-year low (in comparison to the yen).
VOA reported on Wednesday that the IMF had issued a warning that the global economy was entering a "dangerous new phase." It also stated that the economy of the United States continues to face serious problems with regard to housing and government debt.
