More Countries Support Palestine U.N. Bid

9/26/11 (AEIN) During the past few days, additional nations announced their support for the Palestinian U.N. resolution aimed at gaining international recognition of Palestine as an independent state. Israel and the U.S. continued efforts to derail the resolution.

The Palestine News and Information Agency reported on Sunday that the Foreign Minister of Greece said the country "unequivocally" backs statehood for the Palestinians. Russian officials also indicated that they would support the U.N. resolution, according to RT.

The Foreign Minister of Nigeria confirmed that Nigeria will also back the U.N. bid, the country's news agency reported Sunday. The West African nation's President recently met with the U.S. Secretary of State and top Israeli officials, who attempted to gain his support.

Many other countries expressed support for the Palestinian U.N. bid earlier in the month and the year, such as Turkey, Egypt, Iran, China, N. Korea, Argentina and Venezuela. Others remain in opposition, including Canada, the United States and Japan.
