9/29/11 (AEIN) As Internet users become increasingly wary of overused online scam techniques such as unsolicited email offers, many scam operators have turned to relationship-based methods. They contact potential victims using online dating services or classified ads in the "Personals" section, according to Radio Australia.
After communicating for a time to establish a relationship, the scam operators devise a reason to ask the victims for money. Many Americans and Australians have been targeted by such scams. Nigerians often operate them, although they are not always based in Nigeria. Some have offices in European or Asian countries such as Spain and Vietnam, according to the Australian broadcaster.
In addition to email, online classifieds and dating services, Internet users must remain vigilant against scams in other venues such as "chat" rooms and message boards. Some fraudulent offers also arrive through television or mail advertisements. The World Almanac advises extreme care when divulging credit card numbers.
