Laos to Hold Canoe Racing Festival

10/4/11 (AEIN) Laos plans to hold a national canoe racing festival on Thursday October 13th in its capitol Vientiane. The yearly race will occur on the Mekong River. An associated fair will begin on the seventh, the country's official news agency reported Tuesday.

The canoe race starts near the Mahosot hospital in Chanthabouly district. Officials expect the event to attract many tourists to the capitol. The government is working to ensure adequate security in the area, according to the city's Deputy Mayor.

Various food sellers and other vendors will rent approximately 250 booths and stalls at the event. Prices to reserve space vary depending upon the location and size of the sales venue. Many of the booths are located along either side of Fa Ngum Avenue.

Laos is a landlocked country in southeastern Asia. The lengthy Mekong River runs through Laos, Cambodia and far southern Vietnam before reaching the ocean. Another event, the Festival of Floating Bowls, takes place on the river October 12th.
