10/4/11 (AEIN) The Guyanese Health Minister, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, recently urged people in Guyana to make more blood donations. He cited the limited amount of blood reserves and the number of upcoming surgeries as important reasons to give blood, the Government Information Agency reported on Monday night.
A hospital in Georgetown plans to conduct eight open-heart surgeries on Saturday and Sunday. Various other hospitals will need additional blood when they carry out surgeries next week, especially if many accidents occur. The Health Minister urgently appealed for approximately four-hundred donations in the short-term.
Individuals who have reached an age of at least seventeen can donate at blood banks and hospitals in Georgetown, Essequibo, West Demerara, Berbice and Linden. Georgetown is Guyana's capitol, located on the South American country's northern coast. Linden is roughly one-hundred kilometers to the south of Georgetown.
