10/17/11 (AEIN) Fighting between rebels and Gadhafi loyalists continued in parts of Bani Walid and Sirte on Monday, particularly the area near Bani Walid's airport. A new assault by NTC rebels began on Sunday and stretched into the following day, Angola's official press agency reported on Monday.
The agency quoted a rebel field commander as saying that his forces faced "heavy resistance" from the Gadhafi loyalists. Much of the fighting on Monday centered around Bani Walid's airport. Meanwhile in the northern city of Sirte, Monday's fighting was restricted to a couple of coastal areas where strong resistance continued.
Much of Libya remains tense, with no significant central authority in place. Various rebel factions operate independently and use heavy weapons at will, often indiscriminately. Recent news reports indicate that violent clashes occurred in the capitol Tripoli on Friday, apparently after Gadhafi supporters raised a green flag.
